2010 predoctoral fellowship competition open
The 2010 competition for graduate student fellowships sponsored by the Center for RNA Biology is now open. Two fellowships will be awarded to students in the colleges of Biological Sciences or Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and one fellowship will be awarded to a student in either the College of Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine or in a lab that is associated with the PHPID program. Patrick Green honored by University Distinguished Scholar Award

Anita Hopper recieves Lifetime Achievement in Service Award from the RNA Society
Anita Hopper is the recipient of the 2009 Lifetime Achievement in Service Award from the RNA Society. The RNA Society Lifetime Achievement Award acknowledges the impact of an outstanding RNA scientist in the general scientific community. She will be honored at a special awards session at the annual meeting of the RNA society which will be held May 25-May 31 in Madison, Wisconsin. |

Center for RNA Biology names first set of RNA fellows
The Center of RNA Biology has named the first set of three RNA fellows, namely Hu-Yui Chu from the Hopper lab, Noah Reynolds from the Ibba lab, and Yu Zhang from the Li lab. These three competitively chosen students will obtain full stipend and tuition for all of 2009 provided by the College of Biological, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences, the College of Medicine, and the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Anita Hopper elected AAAS fellow
Center for RNA Biology member Anita Hopper has been elected one of the 2008 AAAS fellows for her distinguished contributions to the fields of molecular genetics and cell biology, particularly for the elucidation of mechanisms that control the distribution of transfer RNA. Three new RNA researchers join OSU
Also in 2008 OSU continues to be very successful in strengthening the RNA field by hiring new RNA researchers. Amanda Bird was hired as an Assistant professor by the Departments of Molecular Genetics and Human Nutrition. Her research includes sensing of metal elements by eukaryotes; regulatory roles of novel RNAs and small proteins.
Also the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry hired a new Assistant Professor in the RNA field, namely Daniel Battle. His research interest is the biochemical and structural basis of RNA-dependent regulation of gene expression.
Last, but not least, Robin Wharton joined the Departments of Molecular Genetics and Molecular Virology, Immunology, and Medical Genetics as a full professor. Dr. Wharton comes to OSU from Duke University Medical Center where he has been a Professor and a Howard Hughes Investigator. His research is focused on pattern formation during development of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, especially translational regulation of maternal mRNAs during specification of the embryonic body plan. biochemical and structural basis of RNA-dependent regulation of gene expression.

Kathleen Boris-Lawrie elected AAAS fellow
Center for RNA Biology member Kathleen Boris-Lawrie has been elected one of the 2007 AAAS fellows for her distinguished contributions to the field of molecular virology, particularly in defining post-transcriptional control protein and RNA elements that modulate retrovirus replication and cell growth. Two new hires in RNA research
In 2007, OSU succeeded in attracting two new Assistant Professors in the field of RNA research. The Department of Biochemistry hired Jane Jackman who is interested in molecular mechanisms of tRNA processing enzymes. Also this year, the Department of Neurology hired Stephen Kolb. His research focuses on RNA metabolism in neurological diseases. |

James Cowan wins University Distinguished Scholar award
James Cowan is one of the six winners of the 2007 Ohio State University Distinguished Scholar awards. These awards are given for exceptional scholarly accomplishments by senior professors who have compiled a substantial body of research, as well as the work of younger faculty members who have demonstrated great scholarly potential. Karin Musier-Forsyth new Eminent Scholar in Biological Macromolecular Structure
Karin Musier-Forsyth was recently hired as the Ohio Eminent Scholar in Biological Macromolecular Structure in the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
